Understandably, many think that the name Blue Bay was chosen because of the striking blue water in the bay. The truth is that this beautiful part of Curaçao was already named ‘Blaauwbaai’ (Blue Bay in Dutch), after Anno Blaauw, the owner at the time. He grew limes, oranges and – to make the name even more appropriate – the blue pigment indigo.
The master plan of Blue Bay Resort dates back to 1990, when a local development group purchased the plantation from the Jacobs family and built the first infrastructure. In 1997, developer Steve Raspoort saw the area’s enormous potential. Step by step, he established a thriving resort and golf course. Steve Raspoort passed away in 2007, but his family continued realizing his dream to create a welcoming place where life is enjoyed to the fullest. Blue Bay has since grown to become a household name on Curaçao and in the Caribbean.
Visually, Blue Bay’s golf course is an attraction in itself. Designer William ‘Rocky’ Rocquemore has made perfect use of the natural height differences, sand, sea and rocks, and the result is a joy to behold.
Above all, however, these 18 holes are a joy to play. They offer a surprising challenge to players of every level. Many have learned to play golf here, and have become addicted to this course. More experienced players (and often international pros) happily find their way to the attractive and fun tournaments.
The Golf course is a PAR 72 course that plays 6290 yards for men and 5200 yards for women. The course becomes very challenging when the typical Curacao wind picks up. Because of high elevations overlooking the ocean, the wind can very hard to judge on some of the holes in Blue Bay. Golfers have to control their trajectory of their shots to be able to score low.
